Basic Concepts

Basic concepts covered in 3rd thru 5th grade physical education classes are the components of physical fitness.  The five components of fitness are explained and a fitness assessment is given for components 1-4.  The five fitness components are:

The fitness tests are pacer run, push-up, curl-up, sit and reach, trunk lift and shoulder stretch.  The students are encouraged to work toward improving their fitness levels and work towards or remain in the healthy zone.

Students will be encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Being fit does not only require physical exercise, but also eating healthy.  The students will be encouraged to eat healthy and especially to eat a good breakfast.

The concept of workout will be explained and encouraged in P.E. class.  The importance of a warm-up, stretch, exercise and a proper cool down will be stressed.

Students will be given the names of muscles and asked to identify some of the muscles commonly used in exercise.
