Principal Yogi has a vision for our library... she wants to create a Learning Resource Center where students can be comfortable and creative! In her words, our new library will be a "cross between a Starbucks and a Children's Discovery Center". The Learning Resource Center will have Makerspaces for Science and Art, bar seating against the windows, comfortable seating, and a preschool section for creative play. All of the books will be housed on rolling shelves so that they can be pushed on the side for meetings and activities to occur in an open space. The Learning Resource Center would be open to current Kipapa students as well as Kipapa families (including middle schoolers and high schoolers). Ms. Yogi's $15,000 Tokioka Award and a $25,000 grant from Locations Foundation is helping to fund the project.
The project began this past summer with removing metal shelving from the walls, painting of the interior walls, and removing wooden furniture in the foyer. Over the last few months, carpet tiles and flooring in the foyer have been installed and the Easy & Fiction Sections have been reorganized. On Saturday, September 29th volunteers from Locations Foundation and Kipapa staff members helped to sand, prime, and paint bulletin boards, wooden shelves, and chairs. They also removed metal shelving. The Grand Opening of the new Learning Resource Center is tentatively scheduled for December 2018. Keep a lookout for the Grand Opening announcement!
